After 6 years as a studio, we (founding partners Matt Willey and Zoë Bather) have decided to close Studio8 Design. We’ve had a fantastic 6 years and are very proud of what we have achieved, working with some great people on some wonderful projects. We’d like to say thank you to all our clients; everyone who has worked for us; and all the suppliers who have supported us.

Matt and Zoë are going off to pursue their individual interests in design. We will be continuing as usual at Studio8 Design, working on a number of great projects, until the end of May 2012. Future Industries identity

An identity, including bespoke typeface, for Future Industries. Launching later this year, Future Industries has developed an innovative recycling system that has condensed the industrial recycling process into a compact mobile unit. Customers will be able to bring their plastic waste to the unit and see it turned into a new product in a matter of minutes.

Ben Saunders identity

A new identity for polar explorer Ben Saunders. Ben is embarking on two major expeditions in 2011 – a solo and unsupported North Pole speed record attempt and ‘Scott 2012’ – tracing Captain Scott’s footsteps on the centenary of his unsuccessful trip to the South Pole. Nobody has completed the 1,800 mile journey from the coast of Antartica to the pole and back on foot.

The first applications of the new identity are an exhibition stand, postcards, polo shirts, equipment branding and plasma screen animation for the Ski & Snowboard Show at London Olympia.

Noise Map

A 3-D study of traffic noise levels in London. For the study London was split into a grid of 691 squares and readings were taken from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Noise Mapping project. The poster was commissioned for the ‘UK? OK!! – Graphic Design 1980-2010′ exhibition, featuring Studio8 Design, held in Tokyo.

Central School identity

Founded in 1906 and part of the University of London, Central’s courses are held in high regard. The brief was to create an exuberant new identity which retained a sense of the schools heritage and prestige.

A bespoke typeface – Fogerty - in three weights, drawn by Dalton Maag

Prototype letters for the external signage scheme. The in-line stroke of the typeface has been die-cut out of large powder-coated steel letters and is lit internally with LED lights

A canvas bag produced for the students of Central and an invitation to the brands launch event. The A5 invitations were tiled together at the launch event to reveal the new typeface and brand colours

A series of A6 booklets given to school children participating in The Sorrell Foundation’s initiative JoinedUpDesignForSchools.

Joinedupdesignforschools gives pupils the role of clients for a design project at their school. They work in teams to create a brief for their designers or architects and engage in a process that leads to innovative design concepts for schools and new life skills for pupils.

D&AD Awards Gala

D&AD is a British educational charity which exists to promote excellence in design and advertising. We designed and art directed the 2008 D&AD awards ceremony collateral, including the programme; signage; T-shirts; menus and tickets.

Illustration collective Le Gun were commissioned to create nearly 300 life-size illustrated characters and furniture items to dress the ballroom at the Royal Festival Hall where the event was taking place.

Photofit: Self-Portraits

A project for The Guardian Weekend Magazine by Matt Willey and Giles Revell. Fourteen people were asked to create self-portraits, using a police Photofit kit from the 1970s, without referring to photographs or mirror images of themselves. They were then interviewed by Philip Oltermann on the subjects of identity and the self.

A booklet produced to raise awareness of the destruction of the Amazon rainforest for the San Francisco based charity Rainforest Action Network (RAN).

Each booklet is made from only one sheet of FSC certified paper, folding out from the cover into a 12-page concertina, maximising the sheet usage and minimising waste.
The project was a collaboration with photographer Giles Revell.

Mexico

‘Mexico’ documents the influence of American consumerism on Mexican visual culture. Published by  Chris Boot Ltd, the book is a collection of images by Magnum photographer and collector extraordinaire, Martin Parr.

The Private Life of Palaces

A book collecting historical stories relating to London’s five Historic Royal Palaces – the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, Kensington Palace, Banqueting House, and Kew Palace.

Working within existing design guidelines, we created an accessible and animated publication with specially commissioned illustration and photography. It features a die-cut cover and a smaller, ‘tipped-in’ introductory booklet.

Designed in collaboration with Wolff Olins. Commissioned illustration by Peter Grundy and Bill Bragg. Commissioned photography by Julian Anderson.

Lantern Lit posters

Two posters promoting a Lantern Lit lecture at the V&A’s National Art Library. The talk featured Benjamin Markovits and Adam Thirlwell discussing brands in literary modernism.

Each poster features an appropriate quote – one from James Joyce and one from John Betjeman. When joined together the two posters create a suitably angular, modernist pattern that can effectively repeat ad infinitum.

Quartet

‘Quartet’ contains commissioned short stories by Nicholas Royle, Lucy Caldwell, Peter Hobbs and Shiromi Pinto for a one-off event at the museum.

Inspired by the V&A and its collections, the four stories in ‘Quartet’ were annotated with directions, mapping the routes described in the writers’ narratives and thus enabling readers to follow the stories as they moved through the museum.

The routes were also made available as downloads for Sony PlayStation Portable consoles.

Abbeydale Grange identity

One of a number of schools involved in the JoinedUpDesignForSchools initiative, Abbeydale Grange School in Sheffield is a model of multiculturalism where over fifty different languages are spoken.

Working with the students we developed a visual identity for the school, creating a logo, stationery, signage, posters, brochures and design guidelines to ensure the consistent management and implementation.

RA Magazine: Issues 88-99

Established 30 years ago ‘RA’ magazine is the UK’s leading arts quarterly and has the largest circulation of any art magazine in Europe.

We re-designed the magazine in 2005 and continued to design and art direct each issue until 2008, commissioning photographers including Julian Anderson, Thomas Haywood, Eamonn McCabe and Kai von Rabenau
